Ragnar for Beginners

Ragnar’s tagline is Run, Eat, Sleep?, Repeat and it certainly lives up to that! If you’ve never heard of or seen a Ragnar event, here’s how it works. Ragnar Relay road races are a point-to-point kind of race – that means we’ll start in one city and run until we end up at the finish line, about 200 miles away.

Our team of 12 runners will be split into 2 vans – runners 1-6 in van 1 and runners 7-12 in van 2. Van 1 will start the race and the runners will go in order until the last runner is on the course. With one runner on the road, the rest of your teammates are on support duty inside the van. As runner 1 hands off to 2, and 2 to 3, and so on, the van will have a chance to drive ahead, cheer on the runner, and then head to minor exchanges. Once runner 6 is on the road, van 1 will head to exchange 6, the first major exchange, where they will meet up with van 2, who have been eagerly awaiting their turn. The entire team will be there to cheer for each other and once runner 6 hands off to runner 7, van 1 becomes the “off van” – that is, they can rest, get food, and take a break – while van 2 goes on, and starts their running journey. Again, runners 7-12 will run in order and the two vans will meet again at major exchange 12, where runner 12 will hand off to runner 1, and van 2 becomes the “off van.”

While you are the “off van,” you’ll drive ahead to the major exchange point to wait for your other van to finish their six legs, hunker down and try to get some rest. If you aren’t in the mood to sleep or can’t seem to move your body into sleep mode, try harder because you will need it for the next step.
